What Is A PIO Card?

Person of Indian Origin Card (PIO Card): is a kind of an identification issued to a Person of Indian Origin who holds a passport in another country, besides than Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Some Conditions to attain a PIO Card:

1.

 

person at any time held an Indian passport or;

2.

 

person's parents or grand parents or great grand parents were born in and permanent residents in India, but not moved to Pakistan and Bangladesh or;

3.

  person is spouse of a citizen of India or a person of Indian origin as per above.


The PIO Card system came into existence with effect from 15 September 2002.

Validity Of PIO Card

A PIO Card is valid for a period of 15 years from the date of issuance, subject to the validity of the passport of the applicant. Or in other words, the PIO card will only be valid if the passport held by an individual is valid on a particular given date.

Fees For PIO Card:

After issuance of the PIO card, if the holder is issued a new passport, he should get the new passport number endorsed on the PIO card. There is no fee for this service.

PIO cards issued earlier with a fee of US$ 1000 were valid for 20 years. Holders with these PIO cards are also eligible for a free renewal for a further period of 10 years without any additional fee.

The fee for the PIO card has been revised. The new rate with effect from 15 September 2007 is as follows:

  • Adults: $ 365.00

  • Children below the age of 18 years - $ 185.00

You can also apply for a Duplicate PIO Card copy, incase you have lost your original PIO Card.
